We invite you to explore the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University. Learn about our academic programs, read about our strong links to industry through collaboration and co-op, and see how our faculty members are changing the world through their many areas of research.

Our programs take a novel approach to academics, focusing on the use of technology to solve traditional engineering problems and to advance knowledge. The result is a challenging and innovative curriculum that prepares students to be leaders of tomorrow. We combine a strong grounding in the sciences with hands-on courses in engineering analysis and design.  But we recognize that even the most brilliant engineers need to work together with others and communicate their findings clearly: therefore, our program includes an integrated sequence of communications and team-based courses.

We want our graduates to be responsible citizens, with an understanding of how engineering shapes society and the economy. They achieve this understanding through our mandatory co-op program, our interdisciplinary academic program, and our student-driven societies such as Engineers without Borders.  An interest in engineering entrepreneurship is encouraged and fostered by several joint courses with SFU’s Beedie School Business.

In 2005, we launched the new Biomedical Engineering teaching and research program.  In 2007 we introduced Mechatronic Systems Engineering at our SFU Surrey campus. Mechatronics is an emerging field that combines mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering with software systems, giving our graduates job-ready, relevant skills applicable in almost any sector of industry.  All of our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.

SFU has been recognized as Canada’s No. 1 comprehensive university for three years in a row – from 2007 to 2010 – by Maclean’s magazine. For the 20 years that Maclean’s has been conducting its research, SFU has placed at or near the top of their list, being recognized for its student-faculty ratio, faculty research awards and student resources.

We have many things to be proud of at SFU Engineering Science and I invite you to take the opportunity to learn more through our website or by contacting us directly.
