Undergraduate Application Procedures

With an international reputation for innovation, Engineering Science (ENSC) offers an intense and fast-paced program which mirrors life at the frontiers of development in advanced technologies—microelectronics, computer engineering, robotics, mechatronics, biomedical engineering, multimedia, systems, and telecommunications.

SFU’s Student Services process the applications and offers begin early in the New Year but most offers are sent in April and May.

Admission to SFU

Applicants apply online at the ApplyBC.ca site and must indicate Engineering Science as their primary option.

For general information regarding admission to SFU, visit the Student Services Website or contact Student Services Admissions directly at 778.782.4356.

Admission Requirements for High School Students

Courses Required: Physics 12, Mathematics 12, Chemistry 12, and English 12 with a competitive overall average is required (equivalent senior level high school courses in other provinces and/or countries can be used to meet course requirements).

Visit Student Services for detailed admission requirements.

Applicants must also meet quantitative and literacy admission requirements. For info visit: Admissions Standards.

Admission Requirements for Post Secondary Transfer Students

Students transferring from other universities, regional colleges, or technical institutions may apply to begin study in any semester.  They must have at least 24 transferable credits with a competitive overall admission average.

Upon admission, transfer credits will be awarded by SFU Student Services for appropriate academic courses completed at an accredited university or college. Some transfer credit may be awarded to applicants who have graduated with first class standing from a recognized technology program. For information, refer to the on-line transfer guide at www.bctransferguide.ca.

Applicants must also meet quantitative and literacy admission requirements. For info visit: Admissions Standards.

Applicants apply online at ApplyBC.ca and must indicate Engineering Science as their primary option.

Internal Transfer from another program within SFU

Simon Fraser University students who wish to transfer to engineering science from another faculty must have a Simon Fraser University cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.25 with less than 6 repeated courses and must have been enrolled in at least 12 Simon Fraser University credits in the term prior to requesting the transfer to the School of Engineering Science.  Students with more than 5 repeated courses must meet the same transfer requirements but their Transfer CGPA is calculated after removal of the marks for the sixth or any additional repeated courses.  Such students should see a FAS advisor for help in calculating their Transfer CGPA.

To apply, SFU students may email the appropriate person below. Contact Liz Munt to request admission to one of the Engineering Science options based in Burnaby. Contact Sue Iwasaki to request admission to the Mechatronic Systems Engineering program based in Surrey. Students need to indicate the semester they wish to be admitted, their full name and student number.

Admission Requirements for Second Degree Students

Students must first gain admission to SFU. Once admitted, students apply directly to the School of Engineering Science in the same manner as an SFU student and, in addition, supply copies of all previous transcripts (photocopies are acceptable).

Students seeking course waivers based on courses from their first degree must supply all relevant detailed course outlines, first have them assessed by the respective department (e.g., an outline for a waiver sought for a Chemistry course, must first be presented to the Chemistry department) before being brought to the School of Engineering Science.

Due to Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board guidelines and rules, SFU Engineering will not be able to grant any waivers for an SFU Engineering (ENSC) course.

Please note that students who already have an undergraduate engineering degree may only choose between the Biomedical Engineering option or the Mechatronic Systems Engineering program.  We generally do not accept students to SFU's Engineering program if they already have an undergraduate engineering degree.
